Laura Moore Scorey, a Tennessee artist, calls her works on canvas a “perfect imperfect paintings.” She grew up in a small town in Tennessee, with a love of the outdoors, and many other things. Her grandmother was an established artist and gallery owner- actually the first woman to own and operate an art gallery in Chattanooga, TN. Laura is a mother of 3 young children, so life is filled with happiness, laughter, and total chaos! Her children inspire a lot of her art.
“I attended Baylor School where I participated in the fine arts program throughout school, taking pottery, painting, and after school art programs. I continued my education at University of Mississippi where I enrolled as an art major in the College of Liberal Arts. I returned to the Chattanooga area when my husband matched with the Erlanger residency program in Internal Medicine.
We are back on Lookout Mountain raising our three young children. My children are a huge inspiration for some of my artwork as they keep me very present. Seeing the world through their eyes and their innocence is truly magical. It has sparked the inner child in me that dreams big dreams and feels big feelings. I am inspired by fashion, dance, photography, film, light, darkness, shadow, and more- basically anything that can evoke a deep emotion within. I love to create. I love to create beauty through my artwork and portray a sense of dreaming and ethereal reality.
I try to take in the beauty where we find it but also explore the shadow and darkness that life can bring with it. It’s all a part of living and being present and sitting with ones emotions as they arise. In that, we are capable of creating incredible things. I used to be so scared of perfection. I was scared of not being perfect, and my artwork not being “perfect” enough to share with the world. I am sharing a part of myself on canvas and all my perfect imperfections, just as I am.”
Scorey paints in oil on canvas or wood and often uses the cold wax process. The cold wax process is a mixture of beeswax, resin, oils and mineral spirits. Painting with cold wax and oil is a process of addition and subtraction, laying down layers of oil and wax impressing textures, scratching, scraping and laying more layers of colors and wax until the artist feels like it’s complete.
